Selecting the right senior living community for your loved one can be stressful. There are so many things to consider. That is why we’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions our team receives about choosing the right senior living community in Maryland, Virginia or North Carolina. Let’s get started!
What is an assisted living and memory care community?
Assisted living and memory care senior living communities focus exclusively on the lifestyle, physical and mental wellbeing of their residents. HHHunt opened our first senior living community in 1991 after one of our team members had a challenging time finding a community that catered to his senior loved one’s specific needs. Since that time, Spring Arbor Senior Living has focused on providing seniors with customized care.
Assisted living provides seniors with just the right amount of support they need to live life to its fullest, while memory care specializes in helping seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia. Spring Arbor Senior Living offers both assisted living and memory care.
Where do I start when looking for a senior living community for my loved one?
This is a tough question. There are a lot of websites out there that claim they can help you find the perfect senior living community. However, those websites are all paid a commission when a person moves in. The higher the commission, the more those websites will push a specific community. The best place to start your search is through referrals from friends and family members. Chances are you know someone who has or had a loved one in a senior living community. Ask for their advice. You should also consult with your loved one’s physician who will be able to guide you in the right direction.
What sort of services and assistance do senior living communities offer?
All senior living communities claim that they provide personalized care for each resident but in many cases, that is not true. Spring Arbor Senior Living undertakes a rigorous pre-move-in evaluation of each resident and crafts a customized care plan that is unique to them. That includes understanding your loved one’s dietary restrictions, wellness goals, physical abilities, social interactions and more.
Our communities are designed to be just like home but with added assistance. For example, if your loved ones have mobility challenges, our licensed nurse practitioners and physical therapists can build a plan that will help them achieve their mobility goals through our Wise & Well® program.
What sort of activities do senior living communities offer?
We all love a good game of bingo but that doesn’t cut it for today’s seniors. We take immense pride in having some of the best programming directors in the senior living industry. From trips to the theater to picnics in National Parks, Spring Arbor Senior Living offers world-class activities and programming for all age groups and abilities.
We also offer a host of social clubs and amenities based on individual preferences. Does your loved one enjoy gardening? Many of our communities have robust gardening clubs and partner with local botanical gardens and horticulturalists to host speaking events. We also have several signature programs Art from the Heart and Hearts and Harmony which encourage self-expression through various art mediums.
How do I start the conversation with my loved one about moving to a senior living community?
You have taken the first step in recognizing there is a need which is important. Most adult children of seniors find it difficult to broach the subject at all. We recommend setting aside some time to sit down with a parent or loved one to discuss the possibility of touring some communities.
