How to Prepare Your Home or Apartment for Winter

Winter weather can be extremely unpredictable. It’s only December and there has already been snow in the DC area. Snow, sleet or freezing rain could make an appearance at any time, which is why it’s so important to be prepared for winter weather at any moment. Here are some important tips to prepare your home or apartment for winter:

Stock Up on Supplies: When it comes to winter weather, go ahead and stock up on the essentials.  If you’re a homeowner, buy a snow shovel, rock salt or sand for your walkways and a scraper for your car.  These are always a good idea.  Another good idea is to invest in a warm pair of gloves to keep your hands warm while working outdoors in the cold!

Clear Drains and Gutters: Clear gutters of leaves or other debris as ice and snow can build up to create ice dams which can damage drains and gutters. Avoid the unnecessary damage and repair costs by proactively clearing your gutters and drains before the first sign of winter weather.

Reverse Ceiling Fans: Remember – heat rises. If your home or apartment has a ceiling fan with a reverse switch, use it to run the fan in a clockwise direction after turning on the heat. This will create an updraft that will push the heated air downward. This is especially helpful if you have high ceilings!

Cover All Outdoor Furniture: Snow and cold temperatures can take a toll on outdoor items by causing metal to rust and wooden furniture to crack. Take time to cover your grill and outdoor furniture to avoid the cost of replacement.

We hope these winter preparation tips help you have a have a safe and enjoyable winter. We believe it’s how you live that matters and want you to enjoy all the fun that comes with winter such as sledding or building snowmen with friends and neighbors!
