Summer officially begins this week and it’s not just the temperatures that are getting hot. A number of new home design trends are on fire in 2017. Buyers are increasingly looking for new homes and features that meet their needs and design aesthetic. Home buyers are moving away from traditional designs and floorplans in favor of home designs that are functional, allow for more entertaining and include additional space for guests or multi-generational living.
Given the evolving preferences of new home buyers, we thought it would be fun to take a look at the hottest home design trends this summer. We’ve talked with the experts at HHHunt Homes and have included the top 5 trends below

The Chatham Floorplan in White Hall in Toano, Virginia showcases a large kitchen island and plenty of storage.
Big Kitchens and Large Islands
Home buyers are looking for homes where they can comfortably entertain friends, family, and neighbors. They want more than just open floorplans and are demanding more expansive kitchens with huge islands that can serve as entertaining space. The kitchen is the center of the home and where life happens, resulting in more emphasis on this area of the home.

The Montclair Floorplan in Tyler Park in Fuquay Varina, North Carolina features spacious outdoor patios that are perfect for relaxation.
Outdoor Living
Summertime is perfect for cookouts and enjoying a cool drink on a patio or deck. Covered back porches and extended patios are hot among buyers now, according to Steve Fritz, HHHunt Homes’ President based in Raleigh. Homeowners want entertaining options outdoors as well as indoors.
Guest Suites
First-floor owner’s suites remain popular with buyers, but the newest trend that is skyrocketing in popularity is the first-floor guest suite. Steve Anderson, HHHunt Homes Division Manager for Hampton Roads, noted that homeowners like the option of first-floor suites for guests or family, such as retired parents or kids back from college. Flexibility and efficient use of space are key.

Large showers with his and her sinks are replacing the owner’s suite bathtub, as seen in the Dawson Floorplan at Meadowville Landing Estates in Chesterfield, Virginia.
Showers Replacing Tubs
Big tubs were all the rage for years, especially in the owner’s suite bathroom. However, they’re getting replaced with large showers now. Showers are in and taking new home design by storm. Luxury showers can comfortably fit two people and now feature multiple showerheads and body sprays. Oversized tile or large format tile adds to the appeal of these stunning showers.
Low Maintenance Homes
This is a trend that’s been hot for a few years and shows no sign of going away. Home buyers are demanding new homes that offer lower maintenance so they can spend time with others. Pat McCarthy, HHHunt Homes Division Manager for Richmond, said that townhomes and low maintenance living are the focus of many buyers, especially Millennials.
