As many of you know, HHHunt has made the decision to sell our Spring Arbor Senior Living division to Discovery Senior Living. Over the past 30 years, Spring Arbor has become a national model for assisted living and memory care. That recognition is due to our amazing team members who provide customized and compassionate care to every resident we serve. We want to look back and pay tribute to our Spring Arbor family.
The Idea for Spring Arbor
Spring Arbor Senior Living was born out of an idea that seniors deserved a better way of life than what existed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At that time, rest homes were the predominant form of senior living care in the United States. However, those facilities were often very sterile and unwelcoming. HHHunt’s Jim King and Harry Hunt’s brother, Hammond, did extensive research on the business of senior living and in 1991, launched a joint venture in Statesville, North Carolina.
The project was designed with extensive amenities and home-like features such as dining rooms, living rooms, hair salons and more. The Statesville project was a tremendous success which prompted HHHunt to enter the senior living market in 1992 with its 52-bed community called The Oaks of Thomasville. Later that same year, we opened The Oaks of Lynchburg with space for 58 and a similarly-sized The Oaks of Burlington came shortly thereafter. In 1995, HHHunt adopted the name Spring Arbor for all senior living communities.
Spring Arbor launched its award-winning memory care program called The Cottages in 1996. This highly specialized level of care provided a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for those residents with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia. The programming and support offered in The Cottages were recognized by the Virginia Assisted Living Association and North Carolina Assisted Living Association as being “Best in Class” and were often cited as a model for care.
Our Guiding Principle
“Our Family Serving Your Family with Professional, Compassionate Care” became the guiding principle of Spring Arbor which still rings true today. 30 years later, Spring Arbor has grown into 23 successful communities with 9 cottage programs throughout Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. This success is thanks to the amazing team members at Spring Arbor who always go above and beyond for our residents.
Even though we are saying goodbye to our Spring Arbor senior living division, their story will continue to live on. We are proud to have started this exemplary division, and we are excited to continue to watch it grow with Discovery Senior Living. We know they will stay forever Spring Arbor Strong!
