The United States Golf Association has already announced that the U.S. Open will return to Course No. 2 in 2024, 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047, putting the area in the heart of the golfing world for the next 24 years.
Other notable golf courses include the Southern Pines Golf Club, Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, the Country Club of North Carolina, The Cradle at Pinehurst Resort, and the Bottlebrush course at Longleaf Golf & Family Club. Each course in the area offers a unique design and various challenges that keep players on their toes. Most importantly, the Southern Pines area features courses suitable for every age and handicap, making it one of the friendliest places to play golf.
One thing that makes the Southern Pines area such a special place to live is the locally-owned specialty shopping and dining destinations. Home to hundreds of specialty boutiques, antique shops, breweries, fine restaurants, and markets, you will find something to your liking. At the Bell Tree Tavern, patrons can enjoy more than 100 kinds of whiskey, 27 draft beers, and designer liquors. At the same time, Elliotts on Linden creates beautifully creative dishes inspired by produce and proteins sourced locally from North Carolina. Other award-winning restaurants include Full Moon Oyster Bar, Ironwood, and Zayka Indian Cuisine.
If shopping is more your style, Southern Pines hosts a wide selection of specialty boutiques. Southern Pines is home to over 12 parks, three greenways, several dog parks, and numerous trails and outdoor activity venues. The natural beauty makes Southern Pines a great place to spend your time outdoors year-round. Suppose you love walking, running, or biking. In that case, you can head to Reservoir Park, a 99-acre park with a 2+ mile trail, bike repair station, shelters, and more; when you are ready to take your best friend for a walk, head to Martin Park, a 50-acre, off-leash dog park. The natural paths and wooded areas make it the perfect place for your dog to explore. Right outside of town, you will also find Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, a 900-acre park with miles of walking, running, and biking trails, along with areas for horseback riding. There is a lot to explore around Southern Pines.
It's amazing how much culture and tradition can be found in the festivals of this area! From the Chocolate Festival that takes place every February, where families gather to enjoy a sweet treat, to the Blessing of the Hounds around Thanksgiving, where the priest blesses each hound before the hunt - there's something for everyone to enjoy and learn from. Each festival has its unique history and customs.
One favorite for all locals is the North Carolina Peach Festival in nearby Candor. The Festival is a testament to the peach growing history dating back over 100 years. If you are interested in shopping, the Cameron Fall Antique Festival in October might be right up your alley. You can stroll up Main Street and find antiques from dozens of vendors across North Carolina. The Pinehurst Barbecue Festival is another favorite, with various pitmasters dishing out their favorite recipes. The Southern Pines area offers incredible amenities, dining, shopping, and activities but maintains its small-town feel.
