In 1966, two young entrepreneurs founded what has become the HHHunt Corporation. Harry H. Hunt, III, along with Pete Snyder, saw the need for faculty and student housing at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Operating as the Snyder Hunt Corporation (until 1998), they began Terrace View, their first apartment complex, that same year.
Oak Manor, their first townhome project, soon followed in 1969. The company started Hethwood in 1971. It's interesting to note that this early 316-acre master-planned community now houses nearly 25% of Blacksburg's residents. It also is home to HHHunt 's corporate offices. By 1977 the company had grown to a full-service real estate development company with significant resources to locate, acquire, zone, develop and construct single-family and multi-family projects.
Over the years, apartment properties and property management services have been a cornerstone of the company's profitability/cash flow and continue to provide a stable base to support new growth.
The company expanded operations into Richmond, Virginia, with the development of Honeytree Apartments in 1978. The success soon followed when Wellesley, the company's first master-planned community in Richmond was started in 1986. Its prime location in the prestigious West End of Richmond served to fill a market demand for a high quality, thoughtfully planned and designed residential community.
In 1988 HHHunt brought its successful master-plan model to southwest Virginia's premier recreation spot, Waverly at Smith Mountain Lake, and also began Wyndham, its second master-planned community in Richmond, Virginia. Waverly and Wyndham soon earned HHHunt the reputation for developing the highest quality master-planned communities. Much attention was given to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the land, while creating superb amenities for homeowners such as swimming and tennis facilities, pedestrian paths and sidewalks. The Dominion Club, a premier private country club built around a Curtis Strange designed championship golf course, was added in 1992 and became the centerpiece of the Wyndham community.
HHHunt continued development in Richmond, Virginia with the master-planned communities of Twin Hickory in Richmond's West End, and the Villages of Charter Colony in Midlothian, Virginia. Both are a tribute to the success of HHHUNT and its ability to listen and respond to what the market wants.
By 1990, market studies indicated explosive growth in the senior population and a growing need for new options in senior care. In response, HHHunt Senior Living was formed to provide high quality, residential communities for individuals who were lonely or might need some assistance, such as help with preparing meals or assistance with medications.
In contrast to a nursing home, these communities offered residential features, improved services and were a fraction of the cost of traditional nursing home care. This option proved to be incredibly popular with consumers and HHHunt became a pioneer in what was to become known as "assisted living." Today the HHHUNT family of Spring Arbor now serves seniors in 4 states with twenty-one communities and the mantra "Our Family Serving Your Family with Professional, Compassionate Care."
HHHunt, a major residential and commercial real estate developer, opened its first modular construction facility in Henderson, NC at the start of 1999. HandCrafted Homes offers builders a superior customer service program, including individual sales training and advertising courses, conversion of site-built plans to modular designs, and current market evaluation of residential property.
